A Maternity Clinic in Kibera Slum, Nairobi, Kenya

The maternity clinic opened in January 2009 and has had a profound effect on the slum community. Results speak for themselves. In its first year of operation, the neonatal mortality rate dropped from 8.5% to 1.1%. There were no maternal deaths and only 5% of women were referred for caesarean section. Put another way, we could say that 61 babies and at least 7 mothers were saved during the first year.
